For some years now Occitan studies have had at their disposal many, generally reliable critical editions, trustworthy glossaries, linguistic and codicological studies and, at present, some excellent computerized works of reference. However, given this relative abundance of critical tools, it has to be said that the field is often sadly lacking in satisfactory interpretations of the texts themselves. Commentaries usually refer and are closely linked to a specific critical text, so that authors whose works are to be found in a reliable, though perhaps not recent edition, may only count on commentaries that are either out-of-date or subordinate to the establishment of the text. Moreover, some quite important troubadours, through an explicit choice of the editors, some of whom highly regarded, are accompanied by surprisingly short commentaries.
The online journal, Lecturae tropatorum, proposes a systematic reassessment of the troubadours: it will focus therefore on interpretation rather than on new critical editions. As a rule an existing critical edition may be used, which should be checked and, where necessary, revised or emended. Should the need arise, a new edition may be prepared, in which case it should be accompanied by an appropriate critical apparatus.
