For some years now Occitan studies have had at their disposal many, generally reliable critical editions, trustworthy glossaries, linguistic and codicological studies and, at present, some excellent digital works of reference. However, given this relative abundance of critical tools, it has to be said that the field is often sadly lacking in satisfactory interpretations of the texts themselves. Commentaries usually refer and are closely linked to a specific critical text, so that authors whose works are to be found in a reliable, though perhaps not recent edition, may only count on commentaries that are either out-of-date or subordinate to the establishment of the text. Moreover, some quite important troubadours, through an explicit choice of the editors, some of whom highly regarded, are accompanied by surprisingly short commentaries.

Lecturae tropatorum aims at launching a systematic rereading of the troubadours. The journal also seeks to act as a contribution to a future implementation of the Corpus des troubadours, as conceived by Ramon Aramon i Serra and Aurelio Roncaglia, though its contribution would remain completely independent from the network of academies within which the project was originally drawn up.

The journal will focus therefore on interpretation rather than on new critical editions. As a rule an existing critical edition may be used, which should be checked and, where necessary, revised or emended. Should the need arise, a new edition may be prepared, in which case it should be accompanied by an appropriate critical apparatus.

Ethical code

The journal abides by the ethical code set up by COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics), Best Practice Guidelines for Journal Editors. Editors, editorial staff, referees and authors will follow the following ethical requirements.

Duties of Editors and Editorial staff

Decisions concerning publication   The editors of Lecturae tropatorum are responsible for the publication of articles submitted by the authors after having acquired positive feedback from referees and/or the authors’ implementation of improvements and/or corrections suggested by the referees.

Correctness   The articles submitted for publication are judged on the basis of their content with no discrimination concerning the authors’ ethnic origin, nationality, gender, sexual orientation, religion, or political beliefs.

Privacy   The Editors and other members of staff will not reveal information concerning articles submitted to others apart from the author and referees.

Conflict of interest and release of information   The Editors and all members of the editorial staff will refrain from using in their own research contents of an article submitted for publication without the author’s written consent.

Duties of referees

Contribution to editorial decisions   The procedure employed for the evaluation of articles submitted is that of a double blind peer-review. Referees are two in number: a member of the scientific committee and an outside expert chosen for his/her known expertise concerning the article assigned. This procedure guarantees the quality of articles submitted and favours authors in bringing improvements and/or possible corrections to their work.

Respecting time limits   A referee who feels unprepared for the requested assignment or unable to evaluate an article within the required time limit must inform the editorial staff as soon as possible.

Privacy   All texts handed over for a reading must be considered as reserved. Thus, these texts are not to be discussed with others without the explicit permission of the editorial board.

Impartiality   Referees will assume impartiality towards articles handed to them for evaluation, which should always be detailed and correctly motivated. They are required to provide authors with all useful information needed to improve and possibly correct their work. Finally, they must refrain from revising articles for which any form of conflict of interest might exist.

Bibliographical information   Referees will undertake to point out the details of any important scientific work overlooked by the author. The referees moreover must inform the editorial board of any similarities or overlapping in the text given them to read with other studies they might be familiar with.

Release of information   Reserved information or details obtained during the process of revision are confidential and may not be used for personal ends.

Duties of authors

Originality and plagiary   Authors must declare that they have written a completely original piece of work and that they have cited all the texts employed to this end.

Multiple, repetitive and/or concurrent publication   The author should not publish articles containing the same research in more that one journal. To submit the same text at the same time to more than one journal comprises unethical behaviour.

Indication of sources   At all times the author should provide correct information concerning sources and contributions mentioned in the article.

Responsibility for work   The authorship of the submitted text must be clearly attributed and authors must point out any co-authors and/or contributions, even though limited, of others in the writing of the article.

Conflict of interest and release of information   All authors must avoid conflicts of interest that might have influenced the results reached or the proposed conclusions. Moreover, authors must mention any institution that may have financed the research and/or the project within which the article was conceived.

Errors in published articles   Authors must inform the Editors of any errors present in the publication, even after publication, in order to provide an errata corrige.
